Every town deserves a local restaurant like Stretford Canteen. The bistro at the front of Stretford Mall on Chester Road has been named Best Neighbourhood Venue at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards 2026, praised for its high-calibre cooking and its role as a welcoming local restaurant.

It is a familiar result. Stretford Canteen also took the neighbourhood venue award in 2023 and 2024, a run that says a great deal about how much the restaurant means to its regulars and to the wider Manchester food scene.

The story began with pop-ups and supper clubs before the team found a permanent home in the mall. It was founded by Josephine Sandwith and Dean Taylor, and there is real food heritage in the family. Josephine's parents were behind Beaujolais, a much-loved Manchester restaurant that was a fixture of French dining in the city for more than three decades.

That spirit of generous, unfussy hospitality runs through Stretford Canteen. The cooking is modern bistro food, and the restaurant has been praised for keeping its prices accessible, making it the kind of place people return to week after week rather than saving for special occasions.

National critics have noticed too. The Good Food Guide included Stretford Canteen among the leading North West names in its 2025 list of the 100 Best Local Restaurants, a celebration of affordable, independent places that anchor their communities.

Its location is part of the charm. Set in a shopping centre rather than a fashionable dining street, the restaurant shows that great cooking can thrive anywhere, and it has helped give Stretford a new reason to be on Manchester's food map.

The 2026 awards ceremony took place at New Century in January, with Stretford Canteen collecting its prize alongside Skof, Stow and Pollen Bakery.

Stretford Canteen is at 118 Chester Road, at the front of Stretford Mall. It is a popular spot, so it is worth checking its online listings for the latest menus and booking details before visiting.
