Didsbury Arts Festival fills south Manchester with nine days of art

Every summer, Didsbury turns into a stage. Didsbury Arts Festival is a contemporary arts festival for south Manchester, run as a registered charity, and it fills the suburb's venues with theatre, music, visual art and community events.
The festival has a long history in the area, with listings going back more than a decade describing late-June runs across venues in the village. Like many community festivals, it paused during the Covid-19 pandemic before making a welcome return.
That comeback came in 2023, when the festival ran from 24 June to 2 July under director Rodney Adams with the theme Voices. It was a sign of how much local people valued having a festival of their own. Bringing in a new director also marked a fresh start, and the volunteer-led organisation has continued to build since then.
The 2026 edition stretched across nine days, from 27 June to 5 July, with a programme spanning theatre, music, visual art and events for the whole community. Among the highlights was Handle with Care by the theatre company Ontroerend Goed, bringing acclaimed touring work to a suburban setting.
The festival works hard to involve local artists. Organisers ran an open call inviting participants to put forward work, and Manchester Metropolitan University's performance research group shared the call with its network.
Volunteers are at the heart of the event. The festival's open house arts trail, in which artists and residents open up spaces to show work, relies on helpers, and organisers have appealed for volunteers to make it happen.
It all adds up to an event that feels rooted in its neighbourhood while looking outward. Residents can catch a performance on their doorstep, local artists gain an audience, and visitors from across Greater Manchester get a reason to spend time in Didsbury. For a festival powered largely by goodwill, that is quite an achievement, and it shows what a determined group of local people can create when they share a love of the arts.
Programme details, open calls and volunteering information are shared on the Didsbury Arts Festival website, and the organisers can be contacted by email for anyone keen to get involved in future editions.
