Band on the Wall keeps Swan Street singing in the Northern Quarter

Few Manchester venues carry the affection that Band on the Wall does. Its home at 25 Swan Street, on the edge of the Northern Quarter, has become a fixture for music lovers who want to hear something a little different from the mainstream touring circuit.
What makes the venue stand out is the way it is run. Band on the Wall is a not-for-profit venue operated by the registered charity Inner City Music, which means the shows on stage sit alongside a wider mission to support music and musicians across the city.
The building itself had a significant renovation in 2022, a project that increased the capacity of the main room to 520. That size has proved a sweet spot, big enough for an electric atmosphere and small enough that everyone feels close to the stage.
The programme is famously broad. The venue's news pages have featured the return of the Manchester Folk Festival and events tied to the Manchester Jazz Festival, while the listings for autumn 2026 include Liam Bailey on 11 October, Arab Strap on 13 October and the Scottish folk band Talisk later in the season. Confidentials has also reviewed a show by Bloc Party at the venue, praising a set that did not lean entirely on the old hits.
Beyond the gigs, the charity's community work has been drawing attention. Its two-year World of Song project brought together young musicians who have made Manchester their home, and the venue planned to mark the finale with a special screening of a new documentary, The Song We Carry.
It is a project that sums up the spirit of the place. Rather than simply booking acts, Band on the Wall sets out to reflect the city around it, giving a stage and a voice to communities whose musical traditions have enriched Manchester's cultural life.
For audiences, that mix of global sounds, folk, jazz, indie and new talent means the calendar always holds a surprise or two. It is the kind of venue where regulars happily buy tickets for artists they have never heard of, trusting the programming to deliver.
The full listings, festival dates and news about the charity's projects are published on the Band on the Wall website, and tickets for popular nights are best booked early.
